I
have a PowerPoint talk which I have presented at a wide variety
of venues.
It
was made for the UK Horizons Unlimited rally in 2007 where I showed
it to fellow and ‘would-be’ motorcycle travellers.
But it is equally relevant for any group of individuals who need
a bit of inspiration to follow a dream. We attended the ‘Royal
Enfield Big Day Out in Redditch’ shortly after where I had
to talk without slides as they didn’t show up against the
white tent on a bright sunny day
Other venues include a Local History club in Bristol where I felt
honoured to be considered of historical interest; a combined Norton
and Enfield club in Northamptonshire where I was given accommodation
and dinner by the organisers; an Advanced Motorcycle Group who
didn’t throw me out even though I admitted to breaking lots
of rules and not wearing a helmet when I was travelling; a Women’s
Institute where 'madam secretary’ wore a hat and gloves,
“Jerusalem” was sung and the evening finished with
a hearty National Anthem. I was given home made cake and bought
jam.
Next
was a residential home for the elderly where the residents enjoyed
telling me more about their motorcycling days more than hearing
about mine. “We had an AJS and my husband and I used to
go all over the country on it”. Another resident recalled
his Matchless days.
Talking to 300 people at Bristol’s “Wilderness Lectures”
was daunting but a great honour. It was fun getting the Enfield
onto the stage. It’s very vain and tries to appear at all
my talks. I feel more confident if it’s there, too. I am
particularly grateful for having talked at this event as I was
contacted afterwards by some people who subsequently took their
motorcycle test and have been travelling themselves. We aim to
inspire and have been told that I’ve sown a seed which grew
into independent motorcycle travel. I have made good friends with
people who have attended my talks, too.
We
have been to Aardman Studios famous for Wallace and Gromit and
I was shown where the models are made and filmed.
